What steps should be followed to properly fit-test a respirator?
Fit-testing is a critical part of ensuring a respirator effectively protects the wearer. Here are the steps for conducting a fit test:
- Check the Respirator: Examine the respirator for damage and ensure it’s the correct size and model for the wearer.
- Don the Respirator: The wearer should put on the respirator, adjusting straps for a comfortable fit.
- Perform a User Seal Check: The wearer should conduct a positive and negative pressure user seal check to ensure an initial seal has been made.
- Conduct the Fit Test: Depending on whether a qualitative or quantitative fit test is being used, follow the respective procedures for conducting the test. This may involve performing exercises such as bending, talking, or turning the head.
- Evaluate the Results: If a qualitative fit test was used, the wearer should not have detected the test substance. If a quantitative fit test was used, the measured fit factor should meet or exceed the minimum requirement for the respirator type.
- Record the Results: The results of the fit test should be recorded, including the date, type of test, make, model, and size of the respirator.
If a proper fit isn't achieved, the wearer may need a different size or model of respirator. Fit testing should be performed at least annually or whenever a different respirator is used.
